In a nutshell

Welcome to a more vertical world !
If you can climb a ladder, then you can do a Via Ferrata: cliff adventure for everyone !

Via ferrata

Roadbook

A Via Ferrata is a climbing route where safety is ensured by a steel cable that acts as a lifeline from start to finish. With the right equipment (harness, lanyards with shock absorbers, helmet) and the necessary knowledge, it’s a very safe activity, accessible to all…and full of thrills !

Along the via, a multitude of ladders, rungs and ramps make progress easy, and you don’t need any climbing experience. The steepness can vary from one via to another, from sloping slabs to overhanging passages, and this is mainly what will determine the level of the via. But most are accessible to beginners, and even children !

Various types of suspension bridges and acrobatic passages make the climb even more interesting… in safety, of course !

Even though the first “sporting” via ferrata was built in Austria in the mid-19th century, it was mainly during the First World War that they appeared in large numbers along the border between Italy and Austria, particularly in the Dolomites, to facilitate troop movements in these steep, rocky mountains.

Although these countries still own a large proportion of the vias in the Alps, a number of routes have been developed in France over the last 30 years, one of the most important being the Via Ferrata du Diable, in the Haute-Maurienne Vanoise, in the Arc gorges, directly above the Forts de l’Esseillon (a major military structure dating from the second half of the 19th century).

Our playground !

The Maurienne valley has many via ferratas, from Pontamafrey to Bessans, but the majority are located around the village of Aussois on the site of the Forts de l’Esseillon (photo).

The natural beauty of the gorges, the variety of itineraries, the ease of access and the historical interest of the Esseillon fortifications make the Via Ferratas du Diable a must-see not only in the Maurienne, but throughout the Alps.

Here you’ll find very easy vias (Les Angelots, from 5 years), others more physical and impressive (Les Rois Mages)…and everything in between.

You can also link up to make the pleasure last from 2 hours to a whole day !

We’ll give your children (aged 5 and over) an adventure to remember !

From Les Angelots and Les Diablotins to more ambitious ones (depending on their level and size), the Aussois children’s centers are like a giant playground for kids ! They’ll be motivated and encouraged to try new things, learn how to use the equipment and develop their balance. They’ll also discover the roped party, and how everyone must be responsible for their own safety, and that of others… Under the guide’s supervision, a via ferrata is an excellent learning ground for autonomy.

But above all, they’ll get moving and have fun !
